Today’s POLITICO Arena question was “Should President Bush have gone to Ground Zero?”. Below is my response.
When President George W. Bush was preparing to leave office in January 2009, he frequently told reporters that he was looking forward to being out of the spotlight. He firmly believes that former presidents owe it to their successors to exit the stage and not continue to be participants in the news of the day.
President Bush’s statement congratulating President Obama and the men and women who carried out the mission to bring Osama bin Laden to justice was fitting. It is appropriate that President Bush plans to visit ground zero on the tenth anniversary of the attacks and his decision to politely decline today’s invitation was also proper.
